CdP 2003 & livre la royale at the TGJP

Hello,
We made a great dinner at the TGJP in Paris last friday with a Montlouis 2004 (Cossais) Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2003 (Clos des Papes, Vieux Donjon, Tardieu-Laurent, Marcoux, Charvin & Ferrand) and two Maury.

Mostly I agree with your responses. I'm not a fan of the Clos des Papes,which I find over the top, though not flawed. One could find other successes to put alongside Charvin and Marcoux, Usseglio''s basic cuvee, Pegau, Vieux Telegraphe. But none of these wines will convince those who don't like the vintage as they are all bigger and either more roasted or more candied than their stablemates.

We choosed first the main course and in a second time the vintage. 2003 in CdP is the good buddy with the hare and the fruits. Years before, we have already tried Peyre Rose, Loire 2003 and Hermitage and we're a little bit disapointed.
This sort of meat seems to be the only way to taste the 2003 in cdp.

Thanks for the notes pab. Nice to see the Cossais showing well. He is I think under rated and hard to find here in the US.
Droiture is really the word defining Charvin and to it's great to see that even in 2003 he managed to make a balanced CdP. He is by far my favorite winemaker in this region. Too bad that Bob loves him too.

Cossais is dead. About Charvin, prices are still very low (22 euros).

Yeah I know he's dead. Way too young. But I'm not even sure if he was imported here.
Charvin prices here are just stupid. I think the 07 goes for $70...

While the 07 is pricey, the 08 can be had for under $40 and there were regular sales that allowed getting the 04, 05 and 06 for either $30 or $35. Given that for Charvin fanatics, or at least for me, both 03 and 07 are best for seeing how Laurent can keep these vintages under near control rather than for seeing his wine at its best, the higher prices for the 03 and the 07 may not be a horrible thing. Which is not to say that I don't have both the 03 and the 07 in my cellar.
