Smug self-satisfaction

Satoshi Kanazawa is a bane on society.

Btw, he's the only blogger on Psychology Today who doesn't allow comments; when he started it, there were too many objections to his shoddy methodology and (pace CC) begging the question.

I'll post a link to a take-down of this article, though unfortunately it's not written with any brio.

Still. Fuck evolutionary psychology. Hard.

(And yes, I feel very strongly about this.)

Lots of fun stuff there:

It appears to be their intelligence itself, rather than correlates of intelligence, that inclines them to drink more.

more intelligent individuals are more likely to engage in evolutionarily novel behavior. Since the consumption of modern alcoholic beverages - including binge drinking and getting drunk - is evolutionarily novel

I guess his space limitations didn't allow him to expand on these horrible sentences.

How can you be smugly self-satisfied if you're wasting your time with effective argumentation? Why would you need to convince others? You're right, after all.

Geez, Rahsaan. It's like academia has taught you nothing.

(And you can't really get drunk on light beer.)

I've known a number of folks who claimed this as well. I'd say that their behavior after drinking a six-pack or two proved them wrong, except that their high level of alcohol consumption showed them, by the Hypothesis, to be among the most intelligent, so they must have been right.

See? Now you're getting into the spirit!

"Archeological evidence dates the production of beer and wine to Mesopotamia at about 6,000 BC."

Yeah, well, maybe it does, but he's about a millennium behind on his evidentiary record. A number of the cats studying this think controlled fermentation may go back much further than that, but finding the vessels they were using (animal skins and intestines) is not going to happen.

I don't agree with this in principle, but I agree with it empirically with regard to all known cases. In other words, theoretically, there is no reason to presume that the way the brain works as well as the fact of the brain has been subject to evolutionary change. The versions of speculation before us, however (and they are all speculation as they lack any evidence other than claims about how we are now)are the worst kind of just so storytelling. As the explanation forms for the physiological evolution we can trace get more complex, evolutionary psychology will go the way of Spencerian social evolution. But we may yet get real evolutionary theory about the brain someday.
