1970 Monte Real Gran Reserva

is still unbelieavably fresh and shading towards the fruity end of the spectrum. Some pyrazines as well for those who are averse to this. 1971 Gazin less pyrazine-y, more mushroomy, but quite linear and tiring somewhat. 1970 Cockburn's simple and good. And 1988 J-L Grippat St-Joseph blanc - well worth the wait.

Thanks for the notes. Still under Luca's influence, then? Not a bad thing, really. Wish he would join us. (Wish I would join us, too.)

ah, a good bottle of 70 monte real. They exist, indeed. But the not good ones can still be very enjoyable, as we found out in April.

The two top wines of Bodegas Riojanas, Monte Real and Via Albina age wonderfully. If you are able to find them, look for the 1952 Monte Real or the 1942 Albina; probably two of the greatest riojas ever produced

1952 Monte Real is easily one of the greatest riojas I've tried. I will report back after I am able to locate 1942 Albina :-)

I don't have very high hopes for Monte Real ageing well as of the 2000 vintage, at least not for my taste. Albina still looks great.

You've been to my house, no? :-)

No, '52 Monte Real, but there is a '52 Vina Real, too. Whenever Chico makes it back up from the Dominican, we should do another old Rioja dinner at Tia Pol.

Anyone have a recent tasting note on the '42 Vina Albina?

If you ever come to Spain I think we can fix the Albina. Sadly Riojanas is not in the form it was once...

What is?

.sasha would flip over the '46 Ygay Blanco we had when I was there.

We had a little 1946 Age white and 1947 Marqus de Riscal red tonight, and they showed as fine old Rioja usually does - by giving the impression that it's about 50 years younger, but with huge added doses of delicacy and complexity...

1953 Marqus de Riscal red sadly dead due to a failed cork (I think). There's nothing like an impending move to force one to drink up older Rioja.

I also recall a discussion of Comtes Lafon's Volnay SdM. Both 1990 and 1996 too young, still, although I'm less certain of improvement in the former; I feel like it was always be slightly blocky, square-assed.

We're vaguely thinking of setting up a road show of purple Spanish wines (well, and some white and some not-so-purple too) paired with south Asian cuisine next spring, with possible stops at Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. I'll keep you informed, yixin...

Hope you swing by NY again soon, with or without a roadshow.

We can also fix that...

That Riscal was out of this world...it's a pitty and a shame what they make today...
