TN:Some wines with friends

And I'd love to hear more details on the Weegmuller (particularly re. its availability around the east coast, for those of us who believe there is never enough Scheurebe.)

This was from K&L. Quite good though nowhere near the quality of the 2002 which was right up there with the best of HGS era MC.

It took me awhile to parse this. For a second I thought maybe Hans-Gunther had made a sparkling wine at Catoir and I just didn't know about it.

Good point, I edited my quote to make it clearer.

$54 on pre-arrival at Woodland Hills and well worth that price IMO. One of those Burgundies for which the phrase "haunting beauty" comes to mind.

Sounds good.

That is a whole other price level than $80.

How is the Marechale Blanc?

I found some of the 08 Marechale at a tempting enough price and ordered it. When it arrived today I discovered it was white! It really wasn't anyone's mistake because when I ordered I said '08 Mugnier Marechale' not even thinking about the existence of white Burgundy (a common state of mind). So I assumed red, the shop assumed white.

Luckily the shop had both in stock so I sent the white back and will get the red next week. Did I make a mistake? Miss something? Should I be exploring both?

Is your impression that the "Clos de la Marechale" has undergone constant improvement since 04?

I thought Freddy added some viticulture "help" starting in the 2006 vintage?

...Haven't had the recent versions.

If I may offer a different take. I remember playing with a bottle of the 06 early on for a couple of days and thinking that I had preferred 04 and 05 for their purity. This was very, very good, but just a touch ripe and (more importantly) extracted. Or at least that's how it came across.

I loved the '04 back on release. Never had the chance to try the the '05 or '06. Or '07 for that matter.

I have to say I am nonplussed by JF Mugnier.

More for you guys, I guess.

I don't find the wines or the producer bewildering.

I don't think they are a great value but when I can find the Marechale in the $50 neighborhood and the Fourches (the youngvines Marechale as I recall it being) in the $30 neighborhood those are good wines at those prices for my tastes.

Was fortunate enough to be able to confirm this last night, thanks to a lurker. Wow.

I watched recently as several tasters preferred a 2000 JF Mugnier Musigny to a 2000 de Vogue Musigny, but I found that I disagreed with them. My comment at the time was that the Mugnier style empasizes Pinot fruit over site, which I think is true in a way that is admittedly less extracted or thick than several other producers.
