Stumbling... upon something

Mostly stumbling. But I love two Savennières that I've had in the past few days, both from Domaine du Closel, both from 1998. One is generic Savennières (Cuvée non filtrée), the other Clos du Papillon. Sometimes I think Savennières only works if you're susceptible, you have to be transportable. Anyway, these two have me dead-to-rights.

The Savennières actually seems the more solid of the two, limpid and broad, and very stable, while the Clos du Papillon, essentially similar, but with extra richness, seems a touch swampy, like the waters around the Isle Béhuard on a hot summer evening.

Another stumble is Trinch 2003 which is fresh and lively, bodaceous and full of joy. But in a way self-contained and upright, which is something given that it is basically an invitation to drunkenness. (A 7-year old wine seemingly undiminished by a synthetic bottle stopper.)

Jeff's risky bet on the Trinch was hedged by the near-lock of well made ~15 y.o. old-style Savennieres from an indifferent vintage showing very well.

It's important to build a portfolio.
