Ah, a Pécharmant - I'm finally getting around to this appellation. (It's a smallish region within the Bergerac AOC.) And actually, it is supposed that the name Pécharmant derives from pech (hill, in the regional dialect) and charmant - though that may well just be whimsy.
2007 Château les Farcies du Pech' Pécharmant
40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot, 20+-year-old vines, aged in new and used oak barrels. Its true to its Bordeauxish profile, but not with much sense of new oak at all. Big funky, garrigue-ish blast on the nose upon first opening, but it blows off soon enough. The wine is snappy and intensely flavored in the darker, slightly sourer red fruit spectrum, with fairly stern structure and an iron tang on the finish. (The soil of Pécharmant is iron-rich; perhaps that explains it.) As the wine stretches out, a really nice anise-like note appears on the finish. I like it! The sappy, compact core of fruit veers just a bit toward syrupiness as the wine warms; perhaps in a couple of years it will have calmed down.
