advice on (somewhat) old port. . .

i'll soon be opening a bottle of 1966 berry's own selection vintage port (the source is warre's, per michael broadbent). what's the conventional wisdom on:

how long before consumption time should i open and decant?

how long will it keep after opening?

...read For The Love Of Port site, by Roy Hersh. He has collected industry recommendations here and gives his own (starting a little more than halfway down, after discussing how to use cheesecloth in a Port funnel) here.

(Synopsis: 3-5 hours with at least the following caveats: if storage was uncertain then decant more briefly, if a sip tastes youthful then decant longer)

As to survival after opening, an old VP will last a day at its best.

originally posted by Levi Dalton: I would say give it less time after decanting than the above would suggest and watch the development in the glass.

This is almost always good advice with most any wine.

. . . . . Pete
