Leaving NY is never easy...

... it's much easiere to get there (I hope)... Well I will be shipped to NYC tonight thanks to my girlfriend that wants to keep me away from all those awful Burgundy 2009 tastings...

Is there a wine bar that folks here hold in high esteem ? Something funky works no problems as well.

Thank for listening.

A few have been opening up in recent years but folks here in Nyc still tend to think of this place as lacking wine bars. I guess it depends on the comparison.

Terroir and Ten Bells are two that come to mind which could be worth your trouble. Terroir's list gets much more interesting on the high end, but then it is in Tribeca. Ten Bells has more of interest in the low-mid range. Both have websites with lists.

Anfora is quite nice, but I'm not sure they offer much that the crowd here doesn't have access to on a regular basis, even including their bottles. The lists at their other places (dell'anima, l'artusi) are actually more interesting.

For non-wine geeks though I think it is a good choice. I go quite often, but I also live close by.

OMG! Earthquake in NY? E. 12th St. now in Tribeca?

(Oh, OK.)

Anyone been to that place someone on this board pours at, somewhere way up in the many-multiples-of-12, west side?

But in truth, as someone spoilt rotten to the very core here in Paris, I do think that New York has shockingly few wine bars. And shockingly fewer worth going to.*

That dearth is of course made up for by the possibility of corkage at all and sundry eateries.

And places with, like, good wine lists to begin with. And bars in them.

*Though they are worth going to, even when they are not great, if you are with Chris Coad and they are also giving you free panini.

I need to get to Anfora sometime.

C'mon, we're waiting with curiosity eating at us like red ants. It needs the SFJoe imprimatur. (That should be displayed in the window, like some wine geek health code grade: SFJ.)

There is now a Terroir Tribeca. That's the only one I've been to.

But you're right, I forgot that the 'original' Terroir is in the East Village.

Some of us might think the original Terroir winebar is in SF.

In Nyc, I don't know if the lists are same at the two places.

If they are, that would blow away my theory about the list only really getting interesting at the high end because of the Tribeca location.

It might be more like places called Chez Pierre. I.e., I don't think the Pierres are related. (I mean on the two coasts. The two in NY are fraternal twins both named Pierre.)

Have you been to the Terroir in London?

Well, compared to our choices in Chicago, New York is doing alright. While I was in NYC in September, I spent a good amount of time at Ten Bells. But, everyone knows that's the top joint to hit. Anfora had recently opened, but I didn't make it over there; heard great things about it.

A place that I really enjoyed, that doesn't seems to get much mention is Blue Ribbon Bar. While their list is not as deep or cool as Ten Bells, I thought there was plenty there to choose from (had an awesome half bottle of '95 ESJ Syrah there). Teeny tiny though. The other one I wanted to hit but didn't was Bar Henry. Maybe locals can yea or nay it, but seemed a cool place. Also, never went to the Tribeca Terroir, but I was never sold on the East Village version.

And these are all downtown, surely there's something above 14th st. If you'd ever choose to venture that far north.

Does one need to?

I mean, aside from Gramercy Tavern. And perhaps le royaume de Levi.

Speaking of things off Park Ave. in the 20s, has anyone been to the All New! Less Swank! version of Veritas?

No, I tend to agree w/r/t both locations. The Oooh page, for instance, of Leflaives. Etc. You just want to slam down the plastic for the Montrachet.

But does it go with deep-fried lamb balls?

The problem with Terroir is that so much of the stock seems to be closeouts. Your favorite wines from Austria, but all from 2003, that sort of thing. They don't seem to be selected for interest as much as for margin. It discourages me from going.
