Does Paris really have more than a handful or two of wine bars really worth going to? That may in itself be enough to outdo New York, but would still seem near barren.

Also, it wasn't that long ago that Willi's was nearly it. The new wave of new wave wine bars is relative recent - great restaurant lists being a different matter.
 
Paris has boatloads of wine bars worth going to, and I don't really see how the fact of this being a recent or longstanding occurrence matters; some have been around longer, some are more recent. But there are a lot of them. Barren?!

Just off the top of my head, I would be most happy to suck down a glass at any of the following spots (and often have): Spring Buvette, Le Garde Robe, Legrand Filles & Fils, Le Nouveau Nez, La Muse Vin, Le Verre Vol, Le Baratin, Chapeau Melon, Aux Deux Amis, Lavinia, Willi's, Fish, L'Avant-Comptoir, Le Caf de la Nouvelle Mairie, Bacchus & Ariane, Le Vin au Vert, La Cave des Abbesses, Oh Bigre, etc. etc. etc. I could go on. That's 18, just quickly off the top of my head. And all great.

A few are restaurants. So I've put the ones that are only wine bars in bold. (Spring Buvette is downstairs of Spring Restaurant and is a wine bar only.)

So, 11 in my first group. Throw in some I can think of now, like Le Porte-Pot, Coinstot Vino, Le 5e Cru, Wine & Bubbles, La Belle Hortense, Le Soleil en Cave, Le Rubis, Cavestve and Le Baron Rouge, and we're at 20.

I think it was kind of agreed on that there are two or three in NY. That was my only comment. I love New York, I love the restaurant scene and the wines in restaurants there (and also the corkage possibility). There are some stellar restaurants with mouthwatering wine lists, and ones where you can eat at the bar.

But there are only really a couple or three real wine bars you'd want to go to.

So you're saying the scene in Nyc was better five years ago?

How many of the Nyc bars mentioned in this thread were open five years ago?

I haven't been going to Paris for as long as some of you folks, but wine bars in general are not new. Sharon may mention some of a certain style that happen to be new, but there are plenty of others off her list as well. (Maybe not for folks here either, but the point stands. Not much competition between the two cities on this front).

Why does that matter so much? I tend to agree with Rahsaan.

Also, I should add the bar at Lafayette Gourmet, where I shared some charcut' and vegetables and Agrapart and Jadot MV with said Rahsaan.

As for addresses, dude, lurkers may Google their hearts out.
 
There's a place on Leonard Street that has a shockingly deep selection of Huet. You might even be able to pick up the odd bottle of older Ridge, too.

I'm not so sure. There's usually a lot more wine there than food, though the food is certainly a high point.

Any idea how many were there in the mid '90s? I remember Willi's and Legrand. Maybe la Cave des Abbesses? I thought Le Verre Volé was pretty unusual when it opened (later).

I don't get it. Leaving NY is not easy?! Why would you? Why even think about it? It's simple: don't do it. Even if you're not even there already. Don't do it, don't think about it. Take it from me.

I remember an article in the NYTimes maybe two years ago, that counted up 103 wine bars in New York. Pretty much all of them new. Did they fly away by night already? I only know of one anyway, but for me that's close to enough. Where I'm staying now there are none. Zero. But I won't get started on that.

One thing I like about Paris, one thing among many, is all the little neighbourhood bars, caves, restos, that are seemingly oblivious to the hyped up international-internet-wine-board-reading-traveller. They are just selling a small list of wines they particularly like, or it's their cousins' wine, or something. To have an equivalent situation in New York you would need to have several venues devoted to the wines of the North Fork, or Lake Seneca, etc. Which might be fine, too.

So, to sum up, don't Leave! If you need to, go there first, in order not to leave. Yeah, and drink lots of wine while you are there.

NY Times mentions 103 wine bars but how many are really a wine bar? Because it is trendy, suddenly a crappy place with 10 selections on its wine list is calling itself a wine bar.
There are no more than 5 worthy (interesting and wide selection) wine bars in NY.
