Amarone della Valpolicella vigna Garzon 2006, Pieropan
This is the first vintage of Pieropans amarone from the Villa Cipolla-project. The vines for this project is grown in Cellore d’Illasi. This is neither in the Valpolicella Classico-subzone nor the Valpolicella Valpantena-subzone, but further east and closer to Soave. There where no vines grown at Villa Cipolla when the Pieropans bought this property in the late 90's. But local vines where planted in 2000 on soil that according to Pieropan was highly suited for making Valpolicella. Up until now the property has made two wines: Ghes - a sparkling rose from Corvina and the red IGT Ruberpan. Just released is the first vintage of the Amarone della Valpolicella.
The wine has a deep red colour. Intense nose. Pretty. Lots of red fruits, kirsch, florality, anise. High alcohol on the nose. Quite traditional style. Powerful in the mouth - even for an amarone this is very large scaled. The mouthfeel tells of a concentrated wine, lots of fruit and lots of alcohol. Fine fruit. Some kirsch, cherries, anise, florality. Light leather. Clear and fine style. Quite traditional. Young. Quite nice acidity for an amarone. Little tannins in the back. Lots of alcohol on the finish. Huge wine, huge alcohol, but nice fruit. Great amarone that will be fun to follow in the years to come. My only critical concern is to the sheer power of this wine. Taking it one step down in alcoholic strenght and concentration would perhaps only do it good.

Then it wouldn't be Am-a-ro-nay, would it?!

Even in the context of amarone this is very large. It has 16% alcohol and even more fruit. There is room to make it smaller - within the amarone-appelation.
