Trimbach

Last night Jean Trimbach was at MacArthur Liquors and we tasted a number of his wines. I did not take formal tasting notes (it was a stand-around tasting) and hopefully got the vintages correct of what we tasted.

In summary, their wines are really spectacular. Even their classic wines (Jean winced at the word basic and asked us to use classic) were really excellent. The name Trimbach on a bottle seems pretty close to a guarantee of qualify. Also, it was really a pleasure meeting Jean Trimbach. He was very gratious and we really had a great time talking with him.

We started with a delightful Pinot Blanc. I think the vintage was 2007, but am not sure. In any case a very pretty wine and a steal at the sale price of $13 last night.

Next we had the 2006 riesling. A very pretty riesling with excellent flavors and good acidity. Completely dry, but full of fruit. However, as good as this was, it paled in comparison to the

2001 Cuvee Frederick Emile. This is a great wine now and is only going to get better. Really spectacular. I am not sure there is another white wine that is as good for $50 or less on the planet.

Completely changing gears, we next had the Gewurtraminer (I am not sure if we tasting the 2006 or 2007). Whatever it was, it was absolutely classic Gewurt and was a joy to drink. However, again, it paled in comparison to the

Gewurztraminer Ribeaupierre 2001. What a spectacular wine for $30. A dream of a Gewurz.

We finished with a SGN riesling. Not sure the vintage, not sure the designation. I am only sure that the wine was spectacular.

your prices for the frederic emile and ribeaupierre are going to be difficult to replicate, but they are true world-class benchmark wines. wholesale runs close to or exceeds the prices you are quoting.

I am now being told that the final wine was a 1994 SGN Gewurz. Really good.

At my local retailer, 2001 CFE is $51 and 2004 Ribeaupierre $35.

wholesale varies from state to state. in the state of washington, wholesale would dictate cfe in the low to mid $60 range (unless you were shopping at a high volume low margin store--not the sort of place that would typically stock cfe).

is jean headed up this way (nyc) by chance?

Sorry, but I don't know the answer to that. When I spoke with him, we were discussing his wines and then, believe it or not, Burgundy and Beajolais. Apparently, he just tasted 2009 Duband Burgundies and was very impressed. Given that Duband makes wines from the vineyards that Jacky Truchot used to own, the could of times I have had Duband wines (and it has been a couple of years) I wanted to cry because they did not taste like Truchot.

Total Wine stores often carry CFE (or used to).

The times I have tried them they have tasted like the inside of a well-toasted barrel.

Look forward to hearing your views after Saturday, Howard. I had felt the same way as you about Duband's wines until I tasted the 2007s at the Paulée last year - there's been a real evolution, change is probably a better way to describe it.

word on the street is that his wines have improved significantly and are no longer "modern" or overextracted - but Claude is trying some this weekend so we'll look to him for verification of same.

I confess I bought a couple of his 05 sorbes because I thought it would be fun to compare them to truchot's in a few years.

why, is Duband going to be at the grand tasting?
yes

indeed; now, how did this guy get his hands on a parcel of Gruenchers?

still removing toothpicks.

but the range is "only" 30-40%, which works in some cases and not others, so there must be other unbalancing causes
