A nice Muzard - great value Burgundy

I've had a few of these over the years, and we accidentally opened a rouge last night, thinking it was a blanc (dark in the cellar and kitchen).

06 L. Muzard Santenay Champs Claude rouge

Not much give on the nose, hairsprayish, but in the mouth lots of old vine goodness, dark pinot fruit, surprisingly accessible for an 06 rouge from a vineyard bordering Chassagne. Terrific purity, good balance, and I want to shout the the WD masses, large may they be, that Muzard is a producer I think you would all really enjoy.

This bottle will age very nicely. I won't touch my remaining bottles for quite a while.

This is imported by Vintage 59, but if I had to guess I would have said Rosenthal.

90 year old vines, organic production, zero oak.

Muzard makes very good wines and they are cheap. I hear rumors their '08 are fantastic, but have not tasted.

BTW they use oak AND they are on facebook.

Thanks, BJ, I hadn't heard of them before. They are not that cheap ($35+ for Santenay) and are mostly for sale in California, which makes me think 'gray market.' I'll try one if I find a bottle out this way.

Vintage 59 is a pretty nice outfit, BTW; used to carry De Moor's wines before Joe took them into his portofolio.

This cuvee, at least, had no oak. It is not 1er so maybe that's why.

I'm surprised they're that expensive. The last one I bought retail (99 I think) was under $20.

Just doing the Wine Searcher thing. Premier crus in 2008 start at $35; 2007 Claude starts at $33. The Cellar Tracker 'community average' for the 06 Claude is almost $42.
