I'll be visiting my daughter next weekend in Decatur, and we want to take her and her husband to dinner someplace good. Any tips?

Bill Bounds (a memeber here) lived there for years and made it his mission to seek out Atlanta's best. If you PM him, I'm sure he'd help.
Or you could just drive out to Buford Highway and pick the place where no one is speaking English - which should be, just about all of them.

Nam would have been a good choice, but alas, it closed in early January. "Slanted Door East," as Jim called it, is no more.

"Someplace good" covers a lot of territory, so I'll put my suggestions - a highly personal list - in categories. All allow BYO.

(1) Upscale "fine" dining

- Park 75 - for my money, the best 'special occasion' place in town. Chef's tasting menu is always a delight. Expensive but delivers excellent value. http://www.fourseasons.com/atlanta/dining/park_75/

- Restaurant Eugene - just a notch behind Park 75. Modern American with a Southern sensibility. http://www.restauranteugene.com/

(2) Best food bets in Decatur

- Watershed - http://www.watershedrestaurant.com/

(3) Current Atlanta favorites - from relatively inexpensive (Sufi's) to moderately expensive (Aria, Antica Posta) and in between

- La Fourchette - new, fun, top quality cuisine. The slow-cooked octopus is sublime. http://www.lafourchetteatlanta.com/

- Woodfire Grill - If you can get in. Chef Kevin Gillespie is a real talent. http://www.woodfiregrill.com/

- Empire State South - Top-notch Southern food, and my favorite wine list. Try the boiled peanuts, with a glass of Savannah Verdelho. http://www.empirestatesouth.com/

BTW, welcome to one of the few places on the internet where the words: fuck, Kant and perforce, can appear in a wine related post and make reasonable sense - not that they have to.

Robert Fleming's recommendations are spot on though I would add Holman & Finch, Restaurant Eugene's much more reasonably priced neighbor. Be forewarned that the menu is heavy on offal and the dining room is very loud.

I hear good things about Peter Chang's from reliable sources.
 
Thank you. I had heard only praise up 'til this point. I guess I'll give it another month before I check it out.
