05 ESJ Parmelee Hill Syrah

A couple of bottles from the past month have transformed into a different stage. Much less 'syrah-like' (at least by my standards) and a lot darker, meatier, and richer. It's still an ESJ so it has a streamlined herbal freshness component that is not always present in CA syrah. But it's just leaning so heavily on the sunny richness right now that it's not for me. I suppose it will come back with time? (Although I guess Steve hasn't made too many wines from this vineyard, so who knows).

And always interesting to keep these things in perspective, because I saw notes elsewhere about how 'light' and 'easy' this has been showing. To each his own.

no, I think he said it was light and easy-drinking. 87 or 88.

Boggles the mind doesn't it. I don't think of myself as having an extreme palate (we'll save those accolades for Otto - and only in the nicest way), but even acknowledging my inevitable palate bias I wouldn't be as far off-base as that.

Oh well.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing this wine show a different face in the future.

Maybe they're off-base and you are on. Or maybe you've just had so much Loire Cot and Saar Riesling that your whole spectrum has shifted.

Just came back from a symposium and a few tastings in Washington. Some exciting Syrahs being made there, if you don't pick too late and have the right soils.
