Bit Torrontès

Recent Asimov piece lauding young Torrontès made me grab two slightly older bottles for lunch at my sister's.

2007 Colomé Torrontès Calchaqui Valley Salta 13.5%
From 5-120 yr old vines at 2000 to 2300 meters. Slight moldiness on the cork, hard to believe from such a young 'un, with passion fruit, banana, and generic citrus tones. Mouth is disappointing; decent weight, but insufficient acidity, unattractive bitterness, and an unpleasantly lactic character to the little acidity that there is. Maybe this was slightly damaged, because I can't imagine anyone liking this as is, even allowing for different strokes.

2007 Michel Torino Don David Torrontès Cafayate Valley Salta 13.9%
From 1700 meters. Less interesting nose, mostly asparagus and capsicum, but good acid/sweet balance and pleasant body. This wasn't half bad as a cool quaffer on a hot Saturday, but I still can't relate my experience to what Asimov & Co.'s experience. Maybe they perforce must be snatched from the gaucho cradle.

"This wasn't half-bad as a cool quaffer on a hot Saturday"

That pretty much sums up all the Torrontes I've tasted.

I recently learned the grape is a cross (I guess hybrid, actually) of Mission and Muscat of Alexandria, which is really interesting to me vis-a-vis what I get out of the wine usually...
