Hello, goodbye

VS

Victor de la Serna
I'm fleetingly in the home city of CSW for a tasting of some Spanish estates tomorrow, then going on to Montreal for more of the same on Saturday. Since we're more or less sequestered by our importers and by Wines from Spain, with no free time of our own, I can't see any of the friends here and indulge in some jeebus. Sorry. Hope I'll soon be back and able to say hello in the flesh. If any of you perchance are at the tasting at Per Se tomorrow (mostly purple and heavy southerly stuff - not a generalized cup of tea over here), I'll be happy to see you.

10.30 AM, tasting with a number of writers and sommeliers. 12 noon to 2 PM, walk-about tasting of wines from 23 estates. Anyone interested, call me on +34 696 910 696 during the morning, and I'll add your names to those of the invitees...

And little old Arsenal did something mighty Madrid could not.

And I still hate Pedro, but not as much as Alves.

Can't wait for the Wilshire to Madrid rumors to start.

Ole, ole, ole.

I'm sure we will soon have reports from El Mundo of Wilshere frolicking on a Catalonian beach with Messi in a Barca jersey sometime soon.

"Little old Arsenal". Yeah, and Stan Kroenke is a neighborhood pizza vendor.

Our entire squad costs less than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Anyway, it is beside the point. Stan is an astute businessman. Who wouldn't invest in Arsenal if given the chance.

You got picked apart and were made to look foolish. AT HOME. We took it to them at their own game, and won.

Humiliation may lie ahead at the Nou Camp, but this was as remarkable a match as I've seen in a while.

Who got picked apart at home? Not this season, certainly.

I do hope Arsenal eliminates Barcelona. It will certainly be a pleasure for Real Madrid to meet Arsenal later on. Arsenal fans may be surprised too at the change in that team...

That said, what does all this have to do with my passing through New York? Sorry to remind you of the fact that I'm a basketball person, and only very tangentially a follower of soccer.

My bad, it was at Nou Camp.

Nothing really. Just a chance to stick it to a Madrista.

Apropos of basketball and NYC, you must like what is going on with the Knicks these days.

Personally, I'll be making my first pilgrimage to Spain in less than a month. I am really looking forward to some purple wine with lamb and steaks with cider.

We kind of like our steaks (and our lamb) with purple wine rather than cider... Drop me a line if you want any inside info on where to get any of those (including cider) when here, or to share a glass.

When I was a high school kid in New York I was that most detested of all offenders: a Boston Celtic fan. But I have come to appreciate what the Knicks are doing to become competitive again after such a long time, and what the NBA's first 'European' coach is achieving there (after being much reviled last season).

D'Antoni is a European coach? I didn't know European basketball was all full court offense, chucking Hail Mary Threes, with little to no D.

Absolutely unfair description of D'Antoni's game and of what the winning Knicks are doing this season.

D'Antoni was probably Europe's best defensive point guard ever. Most of his playing career (Italian national team included) and his early coaching career was spent in Europe.

I was being a little glib. Living through the Isiah Thomas horror show has left me a little shell-shocked.

But I just don't think you can win a championship in the NBA with the D'Antoni system. He may have been a great defensive player, but I don't see the emphasis on grinding half-court D that think you need in order to get rings. Sure, we can be perennial playoff contenders, but I've lived with that through the Ewing and Sprewell/Houston eras, and after a while, you kind of hope for more.

The fervor over Carmelo Anthony just reinforces my fears (pure scorer who half-asses defense).

Screagle? Does he own it or something?

I am a fan of all four NBA teams with Spanish players - three of the teams and all four of the players are having good seasons, BTW. Poor Raptors...
