1999 Dard et Ribo St. Joseph

A going-out-of-business gamble from Crossroads...

Opened to tart fruit and reticent nose, faint garrigue and green, evolving into an odd, electric elegance of Kalamata olive acidity and more flesh. Fading, but still intriguing, if a poor pairing with the venison and balsalmic/raspberry gastrique.

And whether they are going out or not, the notion of 10 year old stock from that store, er, oven, is not something that price can fix.

Share the sentiment, but figured six inexpensive gambles might yield one or two gems. Hopes are on the 97 Quinta do Ribeirinho Pé Franco. $4?

so they are really closing? do tell.

I would never buy anything from them. I have had too many bitter experiences over the years.

And wines that have been in the shop for a decade? $4 is way too expensive.

Don't think of your choices as probabilistic. 10 years at Crossroads leaves no possibility of doubt.

Story is they're done. And I've had mostly similar experiences, but figured there might be a few troopers that handled the heat, upright, for way too long. Got suckered back by the 50%+ off closing sign walking by. We'll see.

I personally would not accept any discount to buy totally incinerated bottles from them, but that is just my wacky personal judgment based on decades of bitter disappointments.

Don't let me spoil the party.

It kind of makes me sad though. An old piece of weird NY wine history is gone. Willy once showed me his German sales offerings from '73. Pretty progressive actually.
However, I must agree, that place is an absolute oven.

Don't hope for too much. '06 ZH Pinot Gris and '00 Latour a Pomerol bought by a colleague for blind tasting recently were completely baked out, showing decades older than they should have.

You recently had my remaining bottle from there (as far as I know), '95 petillant huet.

That was the true horror of the place. He bought a bunch of really well selected wine and killed it all.

I can't tell you how many winemakers have told me that Willy was the first to buy their wine. If the story I heard is correct he was one of the first, if not the first, to support Becky Wasserman. David Bowler started his career there. On and On...

I have always tried to buy wine from him as long as it was within days of delivery and he was great at special ordering things because he had many friends.
