2001 Michel Geynale

My sample is not in any danger of going OTH, but damn, it's hard to imagine it making me happier than it is right now.

You could certainly hold it for years.

There are enough tannins to make good company with an onglet a point now. You might have to change menu later.

I wish I had more.

Had a fabulous onglet a l'echalotte at Cercle Rouge a few weeks ago. A neighborhood must.

Really??

You shock me.

That was such a brilliant list when Jorge was doing it, but I had the impression that they weren't interested in art, just in B&T revenue. Food, wine, music, the works.

I haven't been in ages.

tell more.

Well, the wine list is something to sneer at, but the onglet is a marvel, as are the mussels. If you can byoGeynale, combustion could ensue.

The '99 Geynale was also pretty "damn" a few months ago. Did Michel retire? I seem to recall that was the case and we won't see anymore.

I believe Vincent Paris is making wine from the Michel Geynale vines now.
Although Michel may still be making a tiny amount, à la Verset.

I shared a bottle maybe 18 months ago that turned my head but also seemed to need a few more years. So I appreciate the note.

Anyone know how Michel's '85 or '86 are doing?
Ivan from Winelist in Summit claims they both have some life to them. I wasn't a buyer. Grabbed oddball Swiss stuff instead.

GeynaleThe 1990 (when good) is very good right now.

Best, John

Full disclosure: store where I work sells it. '89 Coteaux not so much.

You know, I liked those wines much better five years ago. I had the chance to buy some more recently, and the one bottle I bought seemed to have given up its structure, though the fruit was still very nice. I didn't get more.

It's pretty easy to imagine that some bottles might still be very satisfying, but the average price of the fraction of good ones was getting high from my perspective.

FYI:
I love Cornas and try to taste as many as possible but I did not recognize this name and therefore did not know what was being discussed.
Sometimes shorthand works - sometimes it is frustrating.
FWIW.

I had a bottle of the Cornas, not Geynale, a couple of months ago. If you have any, go ahead, if you don't,
not worth seeking out, unless a steal of a deal. At least going by that bottle anyway.
