I'd expect the hail of 2001, not the wood or winemaking, to be responsible for the disappointing Volnay-Caillerets. It's an extremely difficult and tricky vintage in Volnay-Pommard-parts of Beaune.

Claude,
Thoughts appreciated.
I based my comment on tasting this wine many times since release and, at first, finding it overwhelmingly oaky (even discounting my personal aversion). As other bottles were opened, I noticed the oak scent and vanilla flavors lessening and the fruit drying out. That progression seems to have continued up to this last bottle, where there was really very little fruit left, rather there is now a heavy, quite astringent note that I took to be too much barrel tannin for what the raw materials were (mostly based on how much oak was identifiable in those first bottles).
A difficult vintage no doubt (or at least, so I have read and heard). And regardless of why, this wine has had it.
Best, Jim
