The Chicago stop on the Meet the Growers of Joe Dressner tour

Only the wiTTy ones.

Eden, Lars being the proud descendant of Norsemen, I detected a distinctly Ostrogoth note in his rejection of Wright angles (barbarians love curves, witness their ships, helmets, horns and walkyrie); I wasn't so much referring to his refusal to think outside the sake box.

OK, so I'm signed up and will be there. Since I'll be driving up from Indiana that day, I'll arrive in time for an early dinner prior to the tasting. Anyone interested in joining me? Nothing too fancy or heavy (and not much if any alcohol, natch) but I'll go for something tasty.

If you do get a crew together for dinner, keep me in the loop. I don't think I'll be able to make it to anything before the tasting (work usually goes until at least 6:30), but you never know.

Bummer...

Have fun

Sorry to hear that, Mel. I was looking forward to meeting you at long last.

It's over. At the moment, I believe Kevin, Josefa, Jules and the last remaining vignerons are having one last hurrah at a wine bar here in Chicago. They all deserve a break. It seems to have been a long tour of late nights, early mornings and long days filled with wine, beer, tequila, laughs and smiles. Broken glasses and plane tickets. There were some weary individuals fighting through a haze to diligently show the people of Chicago that there are real individuals putting in real effort to produce real wine that they proudly stand behind. It was a true pleasure to get the chance to meet a good deal of them. Not to mention Josefa, Jules and our own Mark Lipton (who's not as punk rock as one may think [and who can say the same thing about me now]).

I could say many things on many of the wines after tasting them over the last two days, but one thing I know I can definitively say is buy as much 2010 Baudry Rosé as you can. Buy cases of it. I know I'm going to be mainlining it come this summer.

What Lars said, and more. Great wines, great winemakers, great LDM staff, great hosting by WDC in Chicago. (Not bad charcuterie, either!) More detailed notes to follow when I've got a moment, but off to bed with me now after making the 120 mi drive back home. Thanks to Lars et al. for such a fun time at the event too. It was great fun to meet y'all!

Mosse! Mosse! Mosse! Mosse!

Plus, I'd like to thank Matthieu Baudry for leaving the open bottle of Grezeaux on the table at the end of the night - I'm pretty sure it tipped the balance between "no hangover" and this morning's "pass the Advil."

The basic Mosse Anjou blanc has never shown better for me than it did in NY, and I love(d) the Rouchefer, though a friend thought it was a bit too lush.

I could see that, the lushness aspect. I loved the basic Anjou blanc as well. Réné was very excited when my friends from Michigan found out he was really into beer and gave him a bottle of Leelenau beer (made by the guy who does Jolly Pumpkin) to have. You could almost see the big smile through the beard.

I brought him some artisanal cachaça from Brazil when I visited last year, and he flashed the same smile, saying he would hide it from Agnes and drink it with "the boys."

I wonder if all the vignerons will be stopping through Paris tomorrow and will come to the annual Augé tasting of wines from the Rhône. That would be amusing and pleasing.

Great tasting, over 2 days. Kudos to the Dressner team.
Sorry to miss Lars and Mark but I guess we bumped into each others without knowing! Next time hopefully.

I know! I just realized today that I should have looked at your facebook page so I would know who to look for. Next time, yes.
