Make a Dashe for the Avant-Garde Wine Club

Eden, I appreciate that you saw the new, funky-wine wine club at Dashe. Just to say, though, that Anne (my wife, co-winemaker, and native of Brittany) came up with the "Avant-Garde Club." In this forum, we're not too avant-garde....

And, Ruben, you misread our sales tax chart....Oregon, or any state without a sales tax percent figure after it, isn't charged sales tax.

I'm off tonight to NYC for the Michael Skurnik portfolio tasting on Wed--trying to get back early Thursday to SFO for the Farm Wine/Dressner tasting. Winemakers flying all over the place this week.

Hey Mike-

If you stay here a few days, you can hit the Dressner gig here on Saturday and maybe have a dinner or two with some of the natives before then!
 
Unfortunately, I'm leaving early Thursday morning to see Francois Pinon in SF on Thursday afternoon/eve. Might be able to have dinner Wednesday night after the Skurnik tasting though--anyone up for it?

And as long as I'm asking, I'm taking my 27 yr old niece who lives in Brooklyn out to dinner tomorrow night (Tues). Any recommendations for dinner, either downtown Manhattan, or in Brooklyn, that isn't Ten Bells (I know this crowd is Ten Bells-centric....)?

I think there are a few more restaurants in the city (that would meet with WD approval) besides Ten Bells.

Any angle in particular that you are looking for?
 
Momofuku Ssam is great, not super upscale, and fairly inexpensive. No reservations, but I think it can't be that bad on a weekday (I've only been during the weekends and have never had a long wait...knock on wood). (Does East Village count as Downtown?)
 
Thanks for the recommendations. I was just poking y'all about 10 bells. I was going to take her to the Peking Duck House, just because it's close to where I'm staying. With Joe out of town, my main restaurant critic is unavailable.
 
Ssam bar, a venue in which I have eaten perhaps 100 times, has gone downhill, IMHO. The food is no longer top notch across the board, and it is possible to have a mediocre meal from start to finish. The service has always been diner -like, so no change there, but the wine list has also gone downhill. The by the glass offerings are much more generic now.

Which Peking Duck House, Mike? Midtown or Chinatown?

I go to the midtown version now and again.
 
I'm sorry to hear about Ssam. Last time I was there was several months ago, and I was hoping they could keep such a good and affordable thing going.

I guess their A team is focusing more on opening new venues.
 
Downtown Peking Duck House is great (and for those DIYers among us, you fold your own little duck crepe packets).

If you're staying in Tribeca, you might enjoy Locanda Verde, though it's a bit of a zoo. I like a place on the Lower East Side called Sorella, as well.
 
Marlowe and Diner in Brooklyn are accessible from Tribeca by the miraculous Z train from Chambers/City Hall.

Wholeheartedly agree with this suggestion.

Also, you might want to try Torissi Italian Specialties, 250 Mulberry St., which is one of the hotter restaurants in the city right now. The only problem is it's really tough to get seats. They don't take reservations in advance and only have about 24 seats, so the routine is you get on line there about 5:00 pm (a line is already forming then), you wait until 5:30-5:45 when they start putting names down on the list for times that night. They serve a set menu where you get a choice of entree and the menu changes daily and is posted on their website. The food is terrific. They happen to have one of your Zins on the list, btw.
