Massive earthquake in Japan

It's being reported that an 8.9 earthquake has hit Japan about 240 NE of Tokyo and 80 miles off the coast of Japan. Just saw video footage of a tsunami tossing boats and cars around in a city in Japan. I hope all our friends there are ok. So far it appears damage is minimal. Let's hope it stays that way!

Thank you for posting this, Brad. It was the first I learned about the situation.

Thankfully, I have received word from my wife that she is okay. We are still waiting for word from her family. All the circuits are busy when I try to call.

Joel, are you and yours okay?

Tks for the concern, Brad, Levi. Kyoto appears untouched. Re- NE Japan: phones all, land and cell, are down, so I can't reach anyone that I know. Net is working, and a 4F friend in Tokyo says the building is still shaking. Awaiting more news.

Looks like the city and area around Sendai is getting pretty hammered by tsunami. I spent a month there in the summer of '91 as part of a college trip. I have fond memories of the place. Hope the two host families I stayed with there are ok.

hammered (and massively so) is correct. holy fuck. how about a mile wide freight train of water passing thru your ***********?

When I saw the headline this morning, my first thoughts were of Joel and his family. Wrecked infrastructure sucks, but I mostly hope the human loss was low.

Tks for the concern, D and I. We have no tv, so I'm watching the news at the public bath. It's horrendous. No body count yet. Hawaii people should prepare it seems. This is a major event.

I hope they are ok, but the footage from there is pretty scary. Via BBC News they said 200-300 bodies were found on the beach in Sendai.

Glad to hear that Joel and Levi's wife are ok, let's keep it that way.

Holy shit! I caught the news this morning while trying to see what the weather was like. As bad as the quake was, it looks like the tsunami is what's really horrific. The scenes just look awful.

Yeah. No real building collapses as a result of the quake a la Kobe, but the tsunami damage up north seems pretty horrific so far.

Joel,

If you have a moment, what's the perspective on the nuclear plant problems over there? Not surprisingly the American media is all about telling us the terrible things that could happen, rather than what is happening. I hope for everyone's sake that they can be brought under control soon.

I've switched to following the news on bbc.com for a somewhat less sensationalist take. Things are terrible enough as they are.

Yes, BBC and Japan Times appear to have decent coverage, but I think it's going to be awhile before we really know...unless a full meltdown occurs.
