The scenes of utter devastation in and around Sendai are horrific and the nuclear plant situation is terrifying given the combination of apparent lack of timely information from the plant operators and the fear mongering of the US press.
We've had a few Tokyo "refugees" down here in Kyoto in the last week. Ex-pats temporarily relocating their families while awaiting better news and Sachiko's sister and husband, who finally came down to escape the constant aftershocks plaguing Tokyo (and the whole region, at all hours) to try and get a couple of decent night's sleep, before going back up there to work again. The radiation is of course still a major concern, but beyond that the scale of the wreckage and human loss from the tsunami is just immense.
