Tuscan Marriage

I opened a bottle of 2001 Montevertine this week. Based on my luck with this producer I was not the slightest surprised that this had an undeniable hint of cork to it. Not bad enough to obscure all the wonderful things it could have been, but bad enough to spoil the fun.

So I turned to a 2008 Il Poggione Rosso die Montalcino I had been given as a gift recently. This one was actually surprising in that I did not expect all that fruit followed by a cloud of vanilla. I would have put this with full confidence in the new world designer wine basket and I did not like it.

Being unable to drink more than half a glass of either of them I tried a mix, 60% Montevertine, 40% Poggione. Maybe having just recovered from a cold helped, but all of a sudden this had nice structure with a bit of charming fruit and both the corkiness and the vanilla seemed gone. Quite pleasant to drink actually.

I had a taste of the 2001 Montevertine this weekend (in good condition) and was actually surprised at how much I liked it.
Although, a bit dear for me.
Best, Jim

jim, out of curiosity, why were you surprised? i have always considered it a wonderful producer.

Could add some citrus fruit and make Sangria, instead.

That would have been the next step if the blend had not been quite pleasant. Gluehwein being the final degree of escalation.

Okay, maybe I got something mixed-up.
Would this bottle be about $65 or $70?
The bottle I had was and I thought it was going to be a bit new wave for me.
Best, jim

It is about $35 - the $70 bottle (now more) is the Pergole Torte. Not sure if this qualifies as new wave but hey, different tastes...

Montevertine is about as old wave as you're likely to find in Tuscany.

Well, I mean, Castell'in Villa, you know, if someone is keeping score. Or Biondi-Santi.

was delicious last night. upon opening i was a bit worried; it was dull and unexpressive. but, after an hour or so it was a different beast altogether. or, better put, not a beast at all. very suave and silky and seductive. not showing any signs of the warm 97 weather. save one: not sure how much longer i would keep it...

If I were the blind tasting type I would say that that was Gramercy Tavern. Cold, Warm, or Hot?
