NWR: Homage to Charlie Parker

John Roberts

John Roberts
George Lewis may be a genius. The final track of this album is absolutely gorgeous; simultaneously abstract and intensely emotional. Gets me every time. Is there anything better?

P.S. I'm not much for wine & music pairings. (Who is?) I once worked for a chef who thought it was meaningful to construct a "tasting menu" revolving around the sensation of different colors. That said, it's nice to be listening to Homage and staring at the label of Empreinte du Temps.

Although I appreciate such totally improvisational recordings and can get into them intellectually (and I realize that I'm painting with a very broad brush here), I'm rarely inspired to listen to this stuff over and over to truly understand it. I'm all about pulse and groove and development and unless I'm in the right listening mood, it's easy to mistake intense concentration and instrumental mastery with random honks, squawks, and percussive banging.

That being said, for $1.78 (http://amzn.to/fS3tHG) it's worth opening myself up to some new possibilities; maybe this purchase will result in it becoming my grand moment of illumination and I won't file this away in the category of "music that's more fun to play than it is to listen to".

-Eden (Empreinte du Temps? Gnarly Carignane for gnarly music?)

Well worth it, Eden. This album leans toward the quiet side of the spectrum, if that makes it any more attractive.
John, if Eden can't hum it or fake it with his barbershop choir group it's like so lost to him but he's a decent sort.

Oswaldo, you noticed my skill at cool valley talk, a unique way of expressing yourself when in the Los Angeles area. Eden is proficient in the idiom so I knew he would understand.
