2005 Breton Chinon Beaumont

Gregg G

Gregg Greenbaum
Among a bunch of wines, this gem stood out. Groovy wine. Very Chinon. Starting to lose the hard edges with lovely structured CF fruit. In a nice place, but will be amazing in 5 yrs.

Thanks for the note. Has anyone around here had the 08? How does this compare to say the Grezeaux?

Tasted the 08 Beaumont at the winery last October as part of a trio of 08s (I'm including the other two for contrast):

2008 Bourgueil Clos Sénéchal 12.0%
Rich, dense, complex. Attractive sweetness and tannins. Excellent balance; rich and delicious.

2008 Bourgueil Perrières 12.5%
From 70Y vines planted on clay-limestone. Aged 24 months, just bottled. Cherry, mushrooms and spices. Smooth, dense, structured. Lovely.

2008 Chinon Beaumont 12.0%
From 40Y vines planted on clay-limestone, aged 12 months. Closed, but showing some ripe cherry. Silky and smooth, but less rich and complex (than the Bourgueils).

Was this under fake cork? Made for a shorter life for my 2004s, I didn't buy 2005s.

OTOH, my last 2002 was great.

The Beaumont is like a village wine, the Sénéchal and Perrières are both Cru wines. I think of them as 1er Cru, with Perrières being Clos St. Jacques.

In the same lineup, the 2007 Chinon Saint Louans, from 60Y vines, showed as impressively as the Bourgueils (apples to oranges).

It was. Perhaps I should edit my longevity projection.

No, they should be drunk by now.
