New Yorkers, we need help

How many of those you willing to vouch for, Jeff? I confess to not knowing a single one of 1-10, perhaps not so surprising given the nearly 23 years since I last called myself a NYC resident.

I have been to 2, 16, 18, 20, and 37. Going to 14 next week. Most of the others are well-known though I have my doubts about some of the excessively chic ones (11, 28) and the one-note-johnnies (30, 36).

Heh. Jeff's going to a strip joint.

The back room at Gilt is reached by going through the bar and turning right as you are about to reach the dining room, then travelling down the length of the vestibule to a pretty amazing space full of marble columns and Fragonard style paintings. If only they would throw away the ugly tables and chairs it would be about perfect.
So I did the experiment tonight. Met some colleagues for a glass after work and before Tim's plane. I have a very mixed feeling about mentioning the place, it's a bit like Ollivier and Houillon and etc. You want the guys to succeed, but not so much that the poulsard is $60 and you can maybe get one bottle.

Anyhow, I throw it out that this is one of the best deals in the city right now for ambience, service, cool list. Food is not as cheap as everything else, but to drink great wine at a very fair price in that space is such a deal that it cannot last forever. Either it fills up and isn't as fun, or they repurpose the space and make more money. So go now. The list is online.

I hope I haven't said too much.

It is the best place to drink a wondrous bottle in this fine city. End stop.

I beg to differ. There's a place on Leonard Street that can't be beat.

I have been wondering if the fact that the new Ruth Reichl online food venture is called Gilt Taste will run interference with the restaurant's name recognition or bring it new people who believe there is some connection.

Paid, Sir. We speak of the paid venues.

Of course the Church on Leonard stands far above the others in its class.

I'm there. You know when.

Don't care what happens when I return to God's Country.

I'm in town 29th - 3rd. Come then.

Don't know when I'll get back out to SF.

@VLM - can't do it. But will be back!

@SFJoe - may not get there until Friday. Arriving a bit late on Wed with Carson in tow. Although she loves her wine, she needs her Franny's fix even more!

Went to 18 again tonight. Had the "Vegetable" menu, 5 courses. Big win to substitute the mushroom lasagna for the cauliflower course. Also splendid were the king crab salad and the parsnip soup.

Had a glass of franciacorta rose to start, then a bottle of Huet 2005 Clos de Bourg Demi-Sec, and ended with Borgogno Chinato. Also took Central American coffee.

Delightful. Not only the comestibles but also the service, the mood, the quiet.

And, for the second time at this restaurant, and for the second night in a row, I did not even see the bill. (And I won't see the bill tomorrow, at 14, either. A boy could get used to this.)

18 is the big win in the grouping.

18 is one of the Greats of New York, for now, for some time past, and certainly for a few years yet to come.
