New Yorkers, we need help

18 is the big win in the grouping.

18 is one of the Greats of New York, for now, for some time past, and certainly for a few years yet to come.

Danny Meyer certainly seems to have the ability and the sensibility to Do Things Right. Glad to hear about your experience, Jeff, and a belated HB!

Not strictly food related but how about Frick Collection in the morning, followed by the Tenement Museum right after? This leaves you a very short walk to Katz and/or Russ & Daughters for a late lunch. We did this on our last trip and seeing how an immensely wealthy family lived at the turn of the century, contrasted with a glimpse into the life of recent immigrants on the LES really had an impact on us. And the huge upside is that you can then discuss everything over a plate of pastrami or whitefish - or both!! Then... nap. Anyway, just my humble suggestion as a tourist.

The proletariat needs no reminder of whence it came: after the Frick, best to go to the Neue Galerie.

But the proletariat will be so much farther from the pastrami if they end at the Neue Galerie... That would be sad.

Went to 14 tonight. Worst restaurant experience in a long time. Not only did the wait-staff kick our chairs every time they walked by, but they were in a big hurry to get us out of there. The instant you let go a fork, they whisked it away. They even tried to take food off the table while someone was still eating. And, of course, the usual mockery of keeping everyone's wine glass topped up. As a final insult the waiter hesitated to accept our AMEX gift cards. Appalling. There will be no second chance for these fuckers.

Had lunch at 23 today - eh. Good, not great, perfectly fine and affordable lunch, and worth revisiting on that basis, but not at all deserving of being on anyone's "essential" list. Maybe it's better for dinner.

Wow, that is awful. Considering that this is (apparently) a steak house, it's even more surprising as service is usually a large part of the package. Maybe the waitstaff are all PETA sympathizers?

I went to Kin Shop tonight and it was good.

Apparently it is the place to be right now, because I saw two different high powered food bloggers in the house (seperate groups).

ouch. i have had good and bad service experiences. and the wine list sucks. but, i adore the bone in rib eye. what did you think of the steak...?

(i understand that at times truly bad service can blind you to the food. if that happened here, that's cool)

The kitchen made no glaring mistakes. The steak was adequate; not worth any kind of fuss, however.

I may go draw chalk figures on the kerbstone outside their door to warn away the innocent.

I've never felt the urge to return there, but I don't do the steakhouse thing much. Too easy to do at home.

Looks interesting and a descent wine list to boot. What did you have?

I had a pork and fried oyster salad with celery and peanuts, which was tasty but perhaps had a bit too much celery, a special of head on river prawns that was delicious, a goat entree in a light curry that was very good, and thick noddles with shrimp, which was also very good. Ice creams to finish which were good.

It was a good meal. Service was friendly. Everything went well, pretty much.

I would say that some components to some dishes seemed rather oily. Other than that, no real issues.

I would definitely think about going back. Probably it would be best to dine with several people, because the appetizer / entree menu format doesn't easily allow for a lot of different tastes otherwise.

The only amusement that I have derived from the place was noting that they basically hadn't changed the decor since it was Asti. I have one, somewhat fond but utterly cheesy memory of having eaten there under the old mgmt. (Of course, with singing waiters and putting diners into operatic costumes, that's the only kind of memory possible).

You didn't get the squid ink soup? That's a must have for me. I really enjoyed it.

Sorry to have let you down in this way.

Thanks to Eddie Huang I found the greatest soup dumplings of my experience:

Restaurant 456 in Chinatown. Check it out.

The off the menu cold noodle dish is also tops. The beef tendon and jellyfish is pretty good.
