In the cellar (April 16, 2011)

Lungarotti was rocking in Umbria long before Bea. Just to say.

I agree that often the expensive wines are the spoofed. This is the rule in places like Sardegna.

I may wander by the cellar later this afternoon, btw.

I trust all is well since the self-imposed exile. I left instructions on how to fix the damn humidifiers.

How about CSW. Did anyone stop by to taste the Austrians they had open? If I didn't live on the other end of the island (and have a million other things to do), I would have been there!

I did. Surprisingly good showings from a bunch of wines I was inclined to dismiss.

It is going to become gelato. (I also have a LeNotre recipe.)
Let me know how the ice cream comes out. The recipe booklet has lots of savory stuff as well.
Last night I made the goo (milk, sugar, corn starch). Today I whisked in the crema and a few drops of lemon juice, and then churned it (tossed in a few whole nuts towards the end). It's resting in the freezer now but I can already tell you this is a winner, plausibly ranked "OMG" but let's check the final texture before I make the call.

Licking out the jar, the mixing bowl, the churning bowl and paddle, the spoon, the whisk, and the spatula was necessary before washing, of course.

Thanks; I will pick up a few jars next time in Milan and try to make ice cream.

The list did seem like a bunch of odds and ends. But glad to hear they showed well.

I don't know about odds and ends, I had specific worries about most of the wines. But things showed well.

OK, Prager had to deacidify in '96 and that wine was a bit shrill.

Yeah, but I could buy them for $15. And whatever they were, they weren't the same as Bea.

The '75 Rubesco treats me just right, as the '90 Bea Sagrantino may one day, but hasn't yet.

Alas or not, don't know Bea that far back. Did have 70s Rubesco back a long time ago, but admit that I've lost track of where those wines are today. Hopefully will be in the region next year and can do some research.

I am but a simpleton, but I would submit that 70s era Rubesco is bottled happiness. Not the Cabernet, mind you, but the Rubesco. 71 is good. 75 is still young yet!!

I genuflect in front of Bea. A recent '05 Rosso de Veo was just super super and I loved it a lot. But if we speak of Umbria, then I would say two things: don't overlook Antano (f'ing great) and don't forget about old Lungarotti (what my dreams are made of).

And Cervaro isn't the worst. Shoot me, but it's not.

Ok, just located a resto wine list locally with Antano at quite modest prices (although no further back than 2002). Must go there again soon, even though I was there just last Friday.

I take it you share my lack of enthusiasm (to put it mildly) about Caprai?

The wines from the early 90s were good.
