1996 Brundlmayer GV AR

SFJoe

Joe Dougherty
I've had this since release, pretty well stored. But I'm puzzled by the tag on the back, which doesn't look like Bill's. So I'm not sure where I got it.

Pretty golden color, significant tartrate deposit.

Fresh quite beautiful GV aromas, maybe just a hint of funk and a certain amount of development--yellowfruit moving to honey, some botrytis.

Bright acidity and full body, as this wine has always carried. More satisfying in the middle than on the finish, when it gets a bit diffuse.

I fear that with many of the best '96s from Austria, the acid will overtake the fruit in the next few years, and these are not going to improve. So drink up.

love brundlmayer...thanks for the notes. did you try this on release and/or at other points? wondering where in the arc of it's age you liked it best.

I think it was better a couple of years ago, although it has always had an appeal. It's a tough vintage, acidities on many wines are very high.

from your notes thats what i would have thought...

my experience with gv is low...tho i hear they "age glacially", it's good to hear specifics like this. i love the smaragds, but (to change the subject a bit) willi b's brut rose really knocked me out last summer
