Ferrando 2001 Carema, Etichetta Nera

Four hours decant.

Not at all oaky.

A slight stinging quality.

"What every nebbiolo d'alba aspires to."

But, no. It is more than that. It's a bit more civilized. More roses than tar, but it's long on the finish.

Still not barolo but we knew that going in. Not so demanding.

It's now been 6 hours.

The nose reminds me of chinato.

I think I can keep sipping this.

the white label of this was the first red wine I ever bought multiple bottles of - indeed, it was my house red back when I was starting my life as a wino. 1974 was the vintage; $4.75 the price.

In the late 80s, David Schildknecht (who was still in retail) put together a dinner with Neal Rosenthal at Obelisk and a friend of Neal's from NY donated several bottles of the 74 black label to the cause - it was stunning as I recall.

I have one bottle left of the 98 black label - the ones I've drunk have been excellent.
