2009 Port

Not too many port fans hereabouts, but, anyway: I guess 2009 was a curious year in the Douro. Fladgate has declared (Taylor, Fonseca, Croft) but Symington has declined (Graham, Dow, Cockburn). Symington is making a Warre only because it is 200 years since the original Warre participated in Wellington's liberation of Oporto. Scoop from Roy Hersh, da one and only.

Lots and lots of top 2007s (not to mention earlier vintages) still clogging the shelves. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me to declare 2009 (except for something like the Warre declaration).

I've checked an actuary table and haven't bought vintage port in years. I do have enough 83s, 85s, in the cellar for a few more winters plus a decent stock of tawny.

I did the "actuary table" thing as well and discovered I really shouldn't own any vintages past about 94 or 97!!

I don't need actuary tables. I stopped buying new vintages when I turned 50 and that was some years ago.

It holds me back from large purchases of recent vintage Vouvray moelleux.

Guess when you drink old port you do not care for buying recent vintages and cellaring them for 30 years. The fact that 30 year old ports have similar prices to the last vintage of the same wine does not help either...

We have a few bottles in the cellar that just molder - can't figure out what to do with it. Too high alcohol to enjoy with meals (say, steak). Too fussy to open for occasional dessert (you have to finish the whole bottle within a few days). I'm planning to break one out next Christmas and pour a small glass for everyone at the end of the meal.
