The soft shells are ridiculously cheap in Chinatown. The place on Chrystie Street Christine and I got ours was selling them for $20 a dozen for jumbos, $17 a dozen for Large and $13.50 for small. I've never seen fresher ones. Incredibly lively. I think large were about $4 each at Citarella on Mother's Day.

Citarella does a really good job of pumping up stratospheric prices. Although sometimes they have good deals (halibut cheeks were ridiculously cheap last summer) and of course they have beautiful fish and seafood. Which makes it even more impressive that Chinatown had them bested on the pristine-ness.

You can get great deals from Fukushima these days.

Lively critters!

A blue crab medium to large size are $5.00 a piece here in Napa at our favorite seafood store. We must be paying first class air fare for our God Damn soft shell crabs. Have to find a market that brings them flying coach.

Lou, I'm gonna take a not-so-wild ass guess and assume that you have nothing like a 99 Ranch Market near you. Gonna have to make a stop there this weekend and see if any of the little critters are available.

The closest one is in Albany, which we drive down to every now and then and stock up on certain items that only they carry. Just to pick up soft shells which have to be eaten right away doesn't make sense. We usually buy Maine lobsters there also because they are a hell of a lot cheaper than any other market. Thanks anyway. They write about $17 a dozen=unreal. Would we feast at that price.
