TN: Brooklyn Disorderlies Jeebus at Tangled Vine (May 26, 2011)

The Thomain Enfer d'Arvier was a truly strange wine, among a roster of them (and another offputting wine courtesy of yours truly - I promise I'll reform!). Rosenthal brings it in. It had a huge, stinky nose of latex paint and marc/grappa - mistake? Bad bottle? Not sure I want to find out again at the $30 price level.

I truly loved the Thomain Enfer that I worked with at the old place. Tremendous Burgundian esque scope reminiscent of Lafarge for me.

He bottles with added gas, like Overnoy. A lot of people were uncomfortable with the slight prickle on the tongue that remained after decanting.

I was a huge fan of the wine, a wine which made me want to create a meal around it. It was such a "food wine" that it would make me hungry. Truffle salumni paradise.

Bea 2006 IGT "San Valentino" - the declassified wonder is still drinking well, wow

Jeff, when you write "still" I assume you mean that you think it might close down? Sadly I have little first hand Bea experience, and I planned to hold my few precious bottles of this.

Thanks.

I'm not aware of any severe shutdown. When I said "still" I meant that it was still drinking well since the last time I had it (a couple months ago).

My score with '06 San Valentino over the last year has been 1 delicious, 3 tightly clenched and astringently tannic. I stopped opening them.

On the other hand '05 Rosso de Veo is in a great place currently, if a recent bottle is any indication.

I actually grooved on the bottle we shared once it had had some air, as the screechingly intense nose died down a bit (though just a bit) and some sharp red fruits came through on the palate. It went well with food.

Were the bottles you enjoyed as crazy on the nose?

I recall lifted but not crazy.

Hence the notion 'declassified.'

I have never seen a bottle of the 2006 vintage of this bottling and have not tracked this specific bottling over the years. However, I have a bottle of the 2005 vintage in my drinking queue, recently purchased. The label looks exactly as represented on Bea's website. I assume that the 2006 label in some manner specifies its ontological status as "declassified." My apologies for slipshod research, I am getting old.

In conclusion, I have no idea if the 2007 and subsequent vintages are classified as Montefalco Rosso or declassified. Please do not ask me. In turn, I will not query the public internets. Promise.

Had it at Delfina a few nights ago and it sang.

Every vintage of the bottling is Montefalco Rosso except the 2006, so far as I know.

I don't have a lot of experience with this wine, but I know the 2007 San Valentino is also an IGT, so it must have been declassified as well. No matter what, it's delicious stuff. I guess that's what matters most.

Just speculatin', but I think the lower price point on the '06 meant that the wine ended up in more new hands and on more restaurant lists than ever before. I would think that certain high level decision makers probably liked that result. And so I am not at all surprised to see a more friendly price on the San Valentino again in '07 (along with the less stringent IGT classification).

Speaking as a representative demographic, I sprang for the '07 San Valentino on my last visit to CSW, amidst much commiseration about price creep leap in the Bea wines. So there.

the base of the 07 san valentino is from the san valentino vineyard, with second selection additions from the other wines.

I finally got to another bottle of the 09 Thomain Enfer d'Arvier last night, and it was nothing like the strange bottle we had at the jeebus. This was much more, as you said, Burgundian: lifted, fresh, but very sappy and intensely fruited, perhaps due to the vintage. I am very glad I retried this because I enjoyed it quite a bit.
