You only turn 50 once and I have been "hoarding" wines for this event....
Started with
Krug Rose champagne....pale salmon color, yeasty nose with some strawberries....really silky smooth and complex...better and better over the evening....
Next on to...
1961 Huet Le Haut Lieu demi-Sec Vouvray...alc 13%...the cork looks original....this is remarkably fresh and youthful....it has a touch of sweetness with a bit of lanolin and a long finish....great with lobster/shrimp egg rolls... a great showing...
Now on to...
1999 Domaine Drouhin 1999 Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet, alc 13.5%....this started out well and just got better....hint of gunflint...no premox...unctous with apples, pears and a great mouthfeel....not the best ever Montrachet but showing well this evening...
Now on to
1961 Domaine Lynch-Bages...again, what appears to be an original cork and a great fill level....browning at the edges.....nose is fruit/leaves/pencil lead...the fruit still gives pleasure but this bottle was at full maturity....excellent with medium-rare lamb chops....a real treat for those who love/appreciate older Bordeaux
Ending with
1988 Ch“teau d'Yquem, alc 13.5% from a 750 ml....dark yellow in the glass with "long legs"....remarkably this floats gently over the palate with candied orange, honeysuckle and lychee....quite remarkable....years from a possible peak but I'm not sure I will live long enough to see it at its best...
Great time, great food, great friends and great wine....
