I was so psyched to see this in my local wine store. Yup, it's Cuvée Renaissance: rainwater, wet stones, pear, lemon, wincing acidity just barely offset by slight residual sweetness. That sweetness seems less pronounced than other vintages of this wine. It's grand, fantastic, fucking great!, all that; better than the 04 (and certainly better than the 05), probably better than the 02 and maybe as great as the 96. Time will tell.
 
And here I am at least 150 miles from any Romorantin. Thanks a lot! I've only had the 02, but now I've got a hell of a craving...
 
I have lone bottles of the 96 and 02, sitting forlorn in a southwestern corner of the cellar, in wait for a worthy enough occasion, so I'm thrilled to hear that the 08 delivers without the pain of chronos. I was thinking of calling my upcoming son Romorantin (the nickname Romo is soooo keeeüte!), but I don't think that will fly with the missus (much as she digs the acidity).
 
Romo sounds like a name for a robot. Though Romorantin is indeed cool. You shouldn't give up so easily!

A friend of mine (a male Champagne geek married to a non-winegeek wife) managed to have his son named Anselme.
 
I really liked the '08, but I don't think it's quite at the same level of '96, or '02. That said, I'll be buying a bunch.
 
I am smitten by the 08. It's so crystal pure. I didn't try the 02 or 96 on release but I liked the bottle I had last night better than the handful of 02s I have had in recent times. The 96 is magnificent.
 
I will open this tonight. 08, as well.

ETA: Snap's bigger than I'd like, but four attempts to downsize prove fruitless.

Also, I love this wine and was happy to find it at the excellent Cave des Papilles in the faraway 14th arrondissement during a tasting of Pascal Simonutti's wines. (Of which I recommend the Pineau d'Aunis.)

Cool idea, Oswaldo. I think that Romorantin has a cool Medieval vibe -- he could pass for Isolde's protective older brother or a minor figure from the Decameron.

The 2008 I had a few weeks back was a lot blurrier than what you describe. It also went pretty fast, so maybe that was part of the problem.
 
Retested: still pretty precise and pure. Just huge acids and great texture. Chenin-like in that respect. More herbaceous on the nose than I first noticed. A winner.
