Île des Vergelesses

Recent red Burgundies have included several Île des Vergelesses:

2009 Rapet
Soft juicy and friendly but also pretty fresh focused and with its share of mineral detail. For my tastes I prefer the 2008 for drinking now but I see no reason not to follow this in the future.

2008 Rapet
For the first few hours this is actually pretty soft, not what I was expecting from 2008. But with air it gains structure and distinction and really comes into its own, showing much more precision than the 2009. The dark yet clear cherry crystal flavors are very similar to those of the 2008 Chandon de Briailles (who said there is no terroir stamp) but the mouthfeel is just a touch more generous and fleshy. I go back and forth between preferring each one and in the end refuse to choose.

2008 Chandon de Briailles
As mentioned above, this has a similar flavor profile to the Rapet but is a bit woodsy and earthier in the mouth (is that the stems everyone talks about). It may be less generous in terms of weight and flesh but it almost seems more generous in terms of zest and vibrancy. With time the wine gets deeper but the tannins get stronger and I’m sure its best days are ahead. But I’ve really enjoyed a couple of recent bottles and would happily drink more now if only I had the time!

2007 Chandon de Briailles
Softish and pretty-ish with all the typical CdB IdV flavors and structures but in a lighter gentler mode. I guess it’s going through a shutdown/transition phase because it shows well at various moments and in different ways but it doesn’t all come together and sing harmoniously right now.

2006 Chandon de Briailles
I enjoyed a few bottles of this back in 08-09 and it’s still approachable although by the end of the evening it gets darker, thicker, harder, more tannic, and more difficult. But for the first few hours it shows a lovely soft clear trembling jelly quality that is fun to roll around the mouth. I only have limited time/money so am not sure I would invest my resources in lots of this. But I’d still love to taste it again and again in the future.

2001 Chandon de Briailles
I remember enjoying this wine back in 07-08 and was excited to hear recent reports of people drinking stellar bottles at the domaine. Unfortunately the two recent bottles I’ve had in Nyc have been far from stellar: dull, muddy, austere, and simple. Hopefully it’s a stage that it will grow out of.

Thanks, Rahsaan; this is an interesting 1er and its nice to read the combined vertical-horizontal notes. I thought the reputation of PV 1er red in general was that it needs time to come together, and these vintages all seem a bit young to me, with the possible exception of the 01. I've been trying to keep my hands off some stored 02 Rollin Ile.

I have a couple of the 01 CdB's coming in the fall and will try one then, perhaps alongside a '98 and the Rollin.

Well to each his own. I don't have the space to stockpile every vintage and I'm still curious enough about all this stuff to want to taste the vintages young.

I thought 02 Briailles showed quite well last summer but am trying to hold off on my last bottle. I also have a few of the 99 Briailles that I'm not opening.

Otherwise, I was happy to drink these. I might buy some of the 08s and 09s but time, money and space are limited so will see what happens.

Rahsaan, the time to taste 06s from CdB was pretty much in barrel, possibly early in bottle. By November of 2008, they were about as closed as anything I tasted on my trip to Cote d'Or.
Incidentally, I had 07 Lavieres yesterday - consistent with your note on IdV from the same year. But it was changing every 10 minutes, and expsnded and sweetened up significantly to support initial prominent acidity, which is impressive for 2007 ( ditto for 2009 btw ).

Well I certainly didn't taste them in barrel. I think I had my first bottles of 06 CdB IdV sometime in winter 08/09, but it might not have been until early 09 so I definitely missed your window. In that case it will be even more interesting to see them in the future.

While I've not had the 06 Briailles IdV, and can readily believe it is shutting or already shut down, I've had recent positive 06 Cote de Beaune experiences from Pavelot, Pousse, de Montille and Bruno Clair.

In fact, the only closed 06 Cote de Beaune I think I've encountered was a Bize.

Not that that this is terribly relevant but just making small talk...

Nope, the lowly Bourgeots. A bit over a year ago. Was quite stern and the stems were showing in a very watermelon rind / pickled kind of fashion, not terribly pleasant. I'm sure it will achieve a greater balance down the road but it also seemed an underweight and overly stemmy wine that won't ever be anything brilliant.

Rahsaan -- Love the process. Thanks for coherent notes.

P.S. Had a smokin' '05 CdB Iles last fall that, although primary, was just delicious. I'm sure in time it will be monumental.

Interesting. Wouldn't have thought that would be very approachable, even last year. I haven't had any for several years and unfortunately don't have any stored. But am sure it will be delicious.

I've been hands-off on mine, and all my (small) 05 stash. But your note tempts.

Have a half case of 05 CdB Pernand Vergelesses with a note to open the first bottle in 2017. Bummer.

who left the note?

I opened some '06 CdB earlier this year. SlB Aux Fournaux, PV Les Vergelesses and Ile des Vergelesses, Corton Marechaudes and Clos de Roi to be exact. The Ile was the bottle I found most closed and hard to taste. The Les Vergelesses and Marechaudes the most open. Speaking of quality, the Clos de Roi was in a class of it's own.

You'd expect something extra from Clos de Roi; I think Nathan is also a fan of their CC.

How was the Fourneaux? I bought a few bottles when KL was selling them cheaply, but the one I tried (about two years ago) made me want to leave them alone for a long time.
