Global weirding

Here in Oregon, it's the second unseasonably cold and wet spring in a row. Temps this week are in the mid to upper 60s, below the 72F average high. I noticed in the paper that this week last year we were stuck in the upper 50s. After a cool '08, a cold '10 and a cold '11 so far, talk of widespread planting of syrah in the Willamette Valley has grown faint. For now.

Wow, someone already has a book out about this thread:

Here's another one:

The lead editorial in the current New Yorker provides a good capsule explanation of one of the mechanisms of change in regional climates due to net atmospheric warming (with a political angle, naturally).

Remember nuclear winter when we were kids? This is the new nuclear winter. And actually, the thing that's not getting talked about yet is ocean acidification. That should scare the shit out of everyone.

Time to act, people. Just because there isn't enemy doesn't mean there isn't an issue.

Apropos acidification, the documentary Sea Change gives a rather sweetly-framed overview of the subject, for anyone interested.
