2008 P. Pacalet Gevrey Chambertin available for $88 off wine list at restaurant in Brooklyn

Been lurking for awhile, so let me begin by telling myself to fuck off, newbie! OK, now that I have gotten that out of the way, I am going to dinner tonight with some friends in Brooklyn and the restaurant we are headed to (Vinegar Hill House - which has a fairly disorderly wine list by the way) offers the 2008 P. Pacalet Gevrey Chambertin for $88. I was surprised to see this and think it might be a good find, but wanted to solicit advice about whether or not I should order it. I have read a bit about Pacalet but never had the pleasure of tasting any of his wines. So I am curious...and tempted to experiment. On the other hand, most of the people I will be eating with casually enjoy wine but have little clue about what they are drinking, so it might not be appropriate for me to order an $88 bottle to share with them, when there are other good bottles on this list (albeit not Burgs) for $35-$50. Has anyone had this wine?

I have had a few of these (at Vinegar Hill and in Paris) and it is drinking great and the price is retail. Pacalet did great in 08. Don't drink too many of them! I would also add that it might not be well received by non wine geeks.

That's a fab price for a tasty wine. I'm sure it will be well received, but only you can guess how price-sensitive your friends might be.

The latest trend seems to be for newbies to auto fuck off. Though I appreciate the labor this saves, if the objective is prophylactic pain avoidance, it won't work. Fuck off.

PS: that's a damn good price; the Caves Augé online catalogue shows it at 53 Euros.

Victor, the lower price you quoted makes me wonder: AFAIK, Caves Augé belongs to Lavinia, yet prices at the former are supposedly a little lower. Any idea if true?

Not only that, if you buy six bottles, Lavinia will give you a 5% reduction.

Augé is Lavinia-owned, but I guess you have to pay a little extra for the privilege of being hectored by Marc Sibard...

Interesting, CA also gives a discount for six (7%), but if the wines are the same (the CA catalogue says Vieilles Vignes), Lavinia still comes off cheaper.

can we tell noob winemakers to fuck off ?
especially if they are from france?

True, but it is much more efficient.
This is Wine Disorder, not Wine Efficiency.

It is a good price for the wine. Pacalet is not my favorite but I have certainly seen worse things on a wine list. Whether the circumstances are right is something only you can tell us.

I think Sharon means that being hectored by Marc Sibard is usually the price of a lower price (out of a random online sample taken last night of wines stocked by both, Pacalet was the only producer that cost less at Lavinia).

Oh... Special deal with Pacalet? BTW, a couple of us had a very interesting lunch/tasting with Pacalet in Madrid recently. I think he's making progress every year toward a purer style

Any comments from PP about how he's getting there?
