Wine List Cover Page??

We are certainly not the first ones to do this so there should be some good examples/ideas somewhere. Suggestions or links would be welcome.

Let's say we have produced a comprehensive above par wine list of about 300 wines broken down in the typical categories with prices ranging from lowest to highest.

Any thoughts as to what (preferably verbage rather than graphics) should be on the cover page?

1) Alerts to especially good deals?

2) Highlights?

3) Comments on certain wines by (perhaps pseudo)experts?

4) Etc.? Etc.?

Thanks for any ideas or examples.

I have seen a few restaurants lately putting a so-called "Market List" at the beginning. This can mean different things in different restaurants, but it is usually some combination of good values, wines that are especially appropriate for the season, or highly recommended by the sommelier or wine program director.

Then there are the lists that aim for more extensive commentary, one of the more extreme examples being Hearth restaurant in NY (and other Paul Greico establishments): http://restauranthearth.com/wine.pdf

I'd be in favor of using the cover page for "bin end" sales (when you're down to the last few bottles and don't want to keep them on the list proper).

Highlighting things like good values, seasonally appropriate selections, end-of-bin sales, sommelier recommendations, and so on, seems merit worthy.

Incorporating things like these perhaps with other tidbits might be the way to go.

Thanks!

Assuming you're doing something interesting with the wine program, maybe for the cover page a mission statement or a few words describing your philosophical approach, would be cool. Doesn't have to be anything really heavy, but depending on your clientele, a few choice phrases like, "we strive to provide a distinctive wine experience by offering a select range of unique high-quality wines from across the globe," or "each wine is selected from small, exceptional producers in their category, with the goal of creating a memorable dining experience," may serve to reassure them or plant the seed of high anticipation. Anything is possible, so it's really just a matter of expressing what the restaurant is about.

Chaad, Thanks for the good idea which I hadn't thought of! Your idea merits further consideration.

I once saw a list with only a photograph on the front, of the grass in between rows of grapes with all the 'green harvest' bunches lying on it. Very poignant if you understood it.
