That is the daintiest fishmonger's I have ever seen!

Indeed. Although maybe Oswaldo got there at the end when nothing was left.

I'm in Northern Germany at the moment and have been extremely impressed (as usual) by the better fish markets. We went to a smoked fish specialist yesterday where they seemed to smoke everything that exists in the sea. Perhaps I've been living a sheltered life but had never before seen huge chunks of smoked fish roe. Or salmon divided into 17 different smoked products to make sure that no organ or slice of meat went to waste. I've been to plenty of fish markets in Japan which were similar, but I guess this had the added element of smokiness.

Of course I didn't take photos.

Otherwise, nice photos Oswaldo. But what's up with visiting a market in the middle of July and skipping out on all the fruit photos! Olives? Really?

What is up with the huge shallots? I find them in NYC as well.

Aren't they a slightly different onion? I seem to remember Fairway giving them a distinct name (and story). Or was that just marketing.

Hey, don't mess with olives!

There was lots of fruit, but the displays were insufficiently smorgasbordic.

The fishmonger was indeed dainty. He still had plenty of fish, but was a minimalist. His squid looked like porcelain:

shape-wise they look like the "long red of tropea" that we got from our CSA last year. They were absolutely delicious. DOP onions - what's next, chickens?

We're saying the same thing but I'm speaking English. The California torpedos come from the Tropea line. They've evolved a slightly different shape, though. They all come from Calabria originally.

Has anyone had the blue-foot chicken grown in California? I'm curious if they compare at all or are just chicken bred to have a resemblence to the real thing.

They're probably all getting their seed from the same source essentially. The genetics of the US seed supply on that one aren't very stable. There's a lot of variation in color and shape that could stand to be narrowed a bit. And there essentially DOP onions here in the states...Walla Walla and Vidalia both enjoy legal protectiton and oversight to some degree.

Thanks for the pics, Oswaldo...just about lunch time here so good timing. Also, doesn't look like that bridge has changed much since cousin Vinnie was there! Are you/did you go to the sanatorium as well?

It's still in use, and the patients do art therapy, and hang it on the walls. Should I go? For some reason, the prospect scares me a little.
