Wine Storage in NYC

Unfortunately last I heard Chelsea Wine Storage was all full up. You can try calling to confirm if that's still the case but I think it is.

Yeah, or you should have a garage sale. I'll be happy to take some of that Bongran off your hands for a reasonable price.

Brooklynguy had a couple of posts a little while back about his experiences searching for off-site storage in NYC - they may offer some clues.

So, this is it? The moving plans are set in stone?

Jay/Joe, thanks for the heads-up on CWS. I'll give them a call to check.
Lars, thanks for the offer. I'm sure you'll take good care of it, too much of a good care !
Fillay, we'll just have to drink more Bongran to reduce the number of cases to move ! I'll check BG blog.
Moving wine is a nightmare.

Thanks in advance !

I'm using winecare (http://www.winecare.com/) while I await CWS to open up some space, I've been on their waiting list for about 6 months. The only thing that I don't like about it is that they don't have individual cages. I've only been sending wine in so I'm not very aware of how the pick ups go.

Hope this helps.

Don't tell Brad I'm saying this but several people have spoken well of Acker's storage facility. I have no personal experience with it.

Winecare was horrible. They might have improved in the last year or two but I doubt it based on my experience.

Horrible in what sense? Please provide details.

you guys can use wine disorder storage.
but remember, your wine will become property of the people.

I have used Vintage wine Warehouse for a long time. They are very responsive and I've only had great experiences with them. You can't visit your wine though. No customers permitted in the warehouse. Not the lowest cost provider, but I think their charges are very fair for the service.

I have been using the Wine Cellarage, up in the Bronx. Secure facility with professional storage conditions. They do local pickup and delivery in Manhattan for a reasonable fee ($6 per case with a three-case minimum, so if you expect to be asking them to deliver small numbers of bottles on a regular basis, it may not make much sense to use them) and they keep an inventory of your wines that you can access through your account on their website. In person visits/pickups need to be arranged with significant advance notice, so I have never bothered. Meanwhile, I am on the 3-year-long waiting list for a locker at Chelsea Wine Storage - not because I have any issues with the Wine Cellarage, but rather because I like the idea of being able to stop by the Chelsea Market with friends, picking something up to eat, and heading down into the cellars to pull a bottle or two from a locker and do some tasting.

You name it and they screwed it up - inventory and sending the wrong wine when I requested a delivery (very common). To be fair my experience with them ended one and a half years ago. I simulataneously had wine at both Chelsea and Wine Storage because when I realized how bad Winecare was I immediately switched to Chelsea but they could not take all of my wine. CSW is much better but I wish they would send a more detailed notification of wine deliveries.

I've stored wine at New York Wine Warehouse out in Long Island City. Generally pretty positive, though their inventory system leaves something to be desired. Pickups and deliveries were usually very good. They do tend to get "slammed" at peak times, like between Thanksgiving and New Year's. Never lost any wine, nor did they ever send the wrong wine.

I've heard good things about River Valley Wine Cellars, but they are up in Hawthorne and definitely not as convenient.

Thanks Kirk. I will check with them.

I use both Winecare and Chelsea. I have not had Robert's problems with Winecare, but if I had to do it again I would have put those wines in one of the faraway facilities out of the city. Unless you have a private locker like Chelsea offers where you can visit your wine whenever you want, there's no advantage in paying the more expensive rates for an in-city facility. Any facility can deliver your wine to you, doesn't make a difference where they keep it.

Winecare also has the annoying policy of charging annually instead of monthly, which makes for an extremely ugly credit-card hit.

River Valley seemed like a very good operation to me based on my limited experience with the Hospices Auction Group wines.
