I've now had dinner twice at Eastern Standard. I passed on the Offal of the Day the first time because duck hearts don't do it for me, but last night it was sweetbreads and that's just fine.
They were deep fried and served on a bed of corn salsa with frizzled cilantro and a smear of chipotle sauce. Very yum.
I ordered a glass of Cascina Ballarin 2009 Langhe Rosso "Cino", a field blend of whatever was handy in Piedmont that year. It was juicy and lively and bounced back and forth between light Dolcetto strawberriness and darker Nebbiolo cranberriness.
I was in the mood for steak frites and theirs was good: a flatiron steak, actually cooked rare, as requested, is served with Bernaise and a side of crisp shoestring fries tossed with garlic and herbs.
They make their own ice creams so I had a scoop of oyster stout and two scoops of pistachio. Both flavors were quite vivid, which is a good trick with frozen confectionary.
The waiter brought me a gratis glass of Amaro Nonino. The bitterness was an interesting contrast to the sweet pistachio and the mild bitterness of the stout.
A happy camper I was.
