Who has Tasted JP Magnien

Ian Fitzsimmons

Ian Fitzsimmons
I've seen wines from this member of the extended Magnien tree floating around in distant parts for a year or two, but can't find any notes. None are available to me locally, or I'd try them and post myself. Has anyone here experimented with JP yet?

I had the 2005 JP Magnien Clos St Denis a couple of months ago, partly so as to decide whether to grab some well-priced magnums. I would say it was a forgettable wine all around, somewhat thin and acidic, lacking in anything resembling sweet fruit--in fact, blind I would have called it a 2004, but perhaps a cliche version of the 2004 Burgundies (many if not most are better than this).

Now maybe this will show something in 10 years, but I doubt it...

From what I hear, there is no relation to the NBI Magnien. I would have called the JP Magnien style as decidedly old-fashioned--the NBI Magnien seem to me the more modern...

2nd tier, somewhat modern style. The NBI hype is ridiculous.
Not true across the board. Depends what year and which ones, they vary from bleh to pretty damn good. Will they give DRC, Leroy, Roumier, any competition NO!!!!!!! Girardin, Potel, that ilk, varies yes.

There is a cruel joke in the trade here about Girardin. He makes only two wines, a white and a red.
Which is unfair, his lesser wines are quite tasty and good value.

Shoot, now everyone knows how grossly ignorant I am in things Burgundy.

I fear the Politburo will compel me to go around with a large scarlet B sewn into my shirt fronts from now on.
