2005 Frédéric Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin Seuvrées 13.0%

Oswaldo Costa

Oswaldo Costa
A half bottle, accompanying Louis Malle's dated but affecting Les Amants (1958), a curious little movie, concise to the point of and almost being British.
Marcia: So, how's the wine?
Me: Awful, doesn't even taste like Burgundy. Want a sip?
Marcia: Hmm, not Burgundy, but could still be pinot from somewhere else.
Me: You mean like Chile or something?
Marcia: Yes.
Me: I dunno, maybe... In any case, I was a fool to trust Meadows.

Frederic? There's no Meadows reviews of a Frederic Magnien G-C Seuvrees. There are for notes for the 2005 Michel Magnien Seuvrees, and when I see words like "smoky", "dense" and "full-bodied" I certainly do not think of it as an Oswaldo type of wine.

Then I must have bought some Frederic based on the Michel, of which I also bought a little bit. You're right, that doesn't sound like my kind of wine. I prefer "squalid," "anorexic," and "bilious."

Frederic is Michel's negoc operation, que non?

We've had a couple of the FM 02 villages which, failing to resonate emotionally, still supported a meal. Also an 03 Bournique that was quite good, though probably not in a classic Chambolle sense.

Some Magnien wines are modernist messes and others are utterly classic. It's a little frustrating not to know what you're going to get, but I've had enough winners not to write them off. The Borniques is often Musignyesque and better than the Amoureuses. I had a fantastic Les St. Georges once too.

I think it's fair to say that any with the NBI imprimatur are probably going to fall within the former category.

We've sold many bottles of Magnien wines in our store and my experience has been a mixed bag over the years. Quien sabe?

I enjoyed many wines from Michel Magnien in the middle-to-late '80s and early '90s. Later in the '90s the wines were less consistent. More recently my experiences have become rare. I never took to F. Magnien' s wines, with even the hits lacking the depth and sinew of the older Michel wines. I would definitely suggest a taste-first approach with this one.
