Latest Marcassin mailer

It is apparently what went out to their mailing list. If it's a hoax it's a brilliant one.

Totally agree. If you authored the hoax, step forward - genius!

Now I understand the criticisms of their customer service. It was always obvious that she needed to spend her time in the winery figuring out ways to achieve ever increasing levels of extraction. But now it is clear that he spends most his time watching golf on tv and the rest of it digging up material on how the burgundians have no idea what the fuck they are doing.

"bottles of '78, '80 and '85 [La Tache] have been tasted or consumed without apoplexy or outrage."

What a compliment! Those vintages of La Tache did not cause sudden rupture of a blood vessel or profound anger. If only all wine could reach such heights.

Cliff, endnotes drive me nuts as well, although I am willing to tolerate them in a good piece of writing from David Foster Wallace.

I don't think I've ever had a Marcassin.

Though, if they are usually "prodigious," I should probably wait until someone else is buying.

I'll put up with them -- the combination of MLA with endnotes is the absolute worst.

I guess appraisal of optimal ripeness varies ('Ripeness is on the tongue of the tippler?'). Meadows and Tanzer both liked the 06 la Tache a lot. Maybe Marcassin is a Pomerol-style Pinot.

The canopy management analysis was interesting. I haven't read the balance between productive, fruit, and structural plant matter discussed in detail before.

I just read Allen's tasting note on the la Tache. Does not seem like he and Big Bob have the same view of the wine.

That was the situation in which I got to taste a few bottles of Marcassin Vineyard, the 2001.

I had expected it to be a culty ooze-monster. It actually wasn't. It was just a fairly generic California pinot noir with the usual candy/cola/root beer flavors, actually more finessed than most but certainly not competitive with what you can routinely get in Burgundy for $30.

The end notes are often references to The Wine Advocate. What a prankster! Trying to leverage some academic style seriousness with pop culture end notes. Awesome stuff. Not much self reflection going on there.

And can anyone vouch for any of his gobbledygoop about "photohormones"? A lot of "scientific" words I'd never heard before.

I had it once at the Copain blind tasting. It wasn't as bad as the Aubert but I still didn't want to drink it. Though it must be said many people on the room liked it.

This was my note:

2002 Marcassin Marcassin Pinot Noir - spicer nose, ripe and rich, very hot on finish. Other California. D+
