I bought a case of magnums of this on faith and the first one turned out to be terrible. Not terrible as in young, but terrible as in dilute with a slightly swampy quality. Not really sure what the deal is here.

Anyone have any ideas on this wine?
 
I don't know that the term "swampy" describes my response to the wine but I'm with you on "dilute." I was underwhelmed.

It's Ferrando Carema. I've liked it as long as I've liked wine.
 
I opened one few months ago and thought it was just very closed.
Almost nothing aromatically and only structure in the mouth.

The white as much as the red? I have never been as impressed with the white, but I've never thought to stash any away.
 
Ah, that would explain it. Bad news -- I liked the white label on release but haven't had it for awhile.
 
Had it a while back and loved it, from 750. We all liked it enough to split a case around, Jeff opened one that sucked and then shortly thereafter another that was great...

the mystery continues, haven't opened one lately myself...

I was thinking of the Ferrando Carema white label.
 
I think your reference to red may have perplexed, since the other Ferrando Carema has a black label (Etichetta Nera).
 
The white wines aren't Carema, so Bianca refers to the label color which is commonly used to distinguish between the two Caremas that Ferrando produces.

i remember a recent post about a similiar experience with the white label carema. can't locate it with the search function though. for some reason i think it was oswaldo who posted the tasting note.

i think the consensus was heat damage.
 
Yup, after several that were excellent, from a previous batch, I had one that was off, from a new batch, so I was worried that I might have been sold a ball of heat damaged wax. But a subsequent member of the same troupe performed as it should.
 
maybe Levi was eluding to the Produttori di Carema's Red label...i had a similar thought when i read that the first time. please get sorted.
 
Ferrando's white wines undergo a remarkable transformation with maturity. I'm sure you know. As charming as the young wines are, they can also be subtle. With 12 or 15 years of age they seem exuberant with unexpected flavours.
