Dinner with friends:

2007 Pepiere, Muscadet Granite de Clisson:
Fresh, full, pure and precise; a balanced beauty. With two appetizers, one of grilled quail and one of pan seared salmon, perfect.
BTW, this was quite approachable, something I did not expect.

Comparison:
2001 Shafer, Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select and 2002 Shafer, Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select served decanted with grilled veal chop and grilled butcher steak.
Although these wines are not something I have much use for, in their own way, they are remarkable. Both are rich, round, deep and smooth (to the point of being polished) with immense flavor and intensity. In their niche (Napa cabernet) they are about as impressive as it gets. And they went well with the dishes.

1993 Ch. Pajzos, Tokay Essencia:
Dark as walnuts, fragrant and viscous but not cloying, sweet but with zingy acidity and very, very long. With cheese and nuts, excellent.

Best, Jim

Is this damning with faint praise? What means this 'impressive'? One would think it doesn't mean lovable, or wonderful, or delicious. Which surely you have among Napa Cab in your experience. Even the Fay Vineyard wine from Shafer you might find more like that than 'impressive'.

Jeff,
Guilty as charged.
I tried to make allowance for two facts:
I don't much care for Cabernet, and,
I'm not a fan of Napa cab.

That said, I have drunk a lot of them so my comments were by comparison rather than preference.

Regarding delicious or wonderful, etc. Napa cab., I can't think of one right now. Maybe the '79 Shafer and maybe others that escape my memory. But few; very few.

Of course, that's just me.
Best, jim

But it's not just Napa Cab. It's few, very few everywhere you go. Seriously, you can't think of anything other than '79 Shafer?

I've never found a Pepiere at any age that I didn't like. They're different, but they are never what I'd describe as shut down. I'm not surprised that this one showed well. It always does for me, though I'm now trying to keep my hands off of what remains.

I feel much the same, Prof.

Jeff,
I'm old; give me a break.
Hell, I'm almost as old as Kessler.
How about the '82 Cheval Blanc?
Best, Jim

I could remark on this post but my sister the lawyer has given me strict instructions to say nothing more than no comment to any inquires to the above mentioned subject. To allude to not knowing the difference between cab franc and cab sauvignon is libelous in regards to my position in the valley as a wine consultant.

Back in the day, Jim, you know what Napa was best known for: the State Mental Hospital. Says something, huh?
