I'm not gonna be a fat head like all the West Cost nitwits were with our earthquake. For those of you with no experience with a hurricane, it is no joke. Forget everything you are reading about damages, what is really going to suck is when everything floods, the rats will be everywhere. There won't be anywhere to hide, they're heading for higher ground just like you and can swim. Oh yeah, and roaches.

And spiders.

In 2004 the Susquehanna River flooded and reached a level locally that put it in the top five floods since they've been keeping official records. I was at the house of some colleagues that sits on a bluff over the river. They have a short retaining wall at the top of the riverbank. I stood on that wall as the river rose, watching the various small mammals that had fled up the bank to safety. More interestingly, the retaining wall was densely covered with spiders that had also fled the water - I'd never seen anything like that before.

Of course, after standing on the wall for a couple of minutes, my pant legs were also covered in fleeing spiders, which caused a whole other level of excitement when I walked back up to the house.

Waves striking a seawall, 1938 (NWS Historic Collection)

That was the storm the caused Fire Island to be breached in many, many places-- Altantic Ocean meets the GS Bay.

I read a sensible recommendation on another board to lower cooling unit temps now so that in case of a power outage it will stay cool longer.

I also filled my empty slots with bottled water for the same reason (of course I have a small unit so the thermal mass isn't as much as for a bigger one).

Both good ideas.

The latter will help efficiency at any time.

During the NYC blackout of 2003, my unit only gained a couple of degrees. I was pleased and surprised.

Same here and my units had only been on about two days as I had just moved in to this place.
