Well, Eric Asimov's evil plan to control all wine writing in America* has taken a dastardly turn. Slate cancelled Mike Steinberger's column.

I have found Mike to be among the best, if not the best, wine writers in America. I wish him well in whatever endeavors are next and he will certainly have my support.

And to Eric, congratulations you evil bastard!

* OK, I know very well that Eric is not evil and that there are other good writers besides just Mike and Eric, but not many. Losing any one of them is a bigger loss than it may seem.

But Steinberger looks so healthy (new post yesterday...?). Where did you learn the news? Slate still lists him on the site as their columnist.

Oh, I guess that post was from his blog. But no mention there.

Talia's doing a good job, she'll help keep EA on his game.

Steinberger is great. But Slate fired a few good people, including the estimable Timothy Noah and the annoying but sometimes interesting Jack Shafer.

But we get more Weigel and XX blog posts!

I didn't know who else went. I think both Shafer and Noah will find new pastures.

Twitter, natch.

And, oh, if this is so (termination of Steinberger's most excellent and always immediately read column on Slate.com), it is MeSSeD UP.

(Is that the typography necessary to indicate my internet ire?)
